Anita's HWB Post

4) Chris purchased the following items:
  • 2 binders for 4.99 each (about $10.00)
  • 1 math set for 3.99
  • a backpack for 16.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST and 7% PST.

Step 1: Add all the costs of the supplies to get a sum of $24.98.
Step 2: Multiply the sum by 0.12. The reason you multiply it by 0.12 is because it is the result of adding the GST and PST together.

Step 3: Add the taxes to the total.

Chapter Review

8) The coach asked the team to give 110%

a) What is this value as a fraction and decimal number?
The value of this as a fraction is a 110 and the decimal number is 1.10
100

b) What does this statement mean to you?
I think it means that the coach wanted the team to do their best.

9) Copy and complete the following table. The first row is done for you.

My answers:
Please tell me if I made any mistakes! I am not sure about a lot of the answers in the fractions column, so correct me if I'm wrong! (:

This blog doesn't let me add colour to my post so I'm sorry about that.

Anita's We Day Post

On Wednesday, November 23rd, I had one of the best experiences of my life! We Day was such an inspiring, fun time that I didn't want it to end! Once you walk through the doors of the Mts Center all you can see are thousands of students and adults everywhere. There were a lot of different booths advertising different things. There was one stand promoting the Vow of Silence campaign, even a booth advertising Boston PIzza! There was one game where you can win Boston Pizza coupon, and I won $5.00 off my next pizza.. when you purchase something over 25 dollars :(
The Mts Center is exceptionally big, and it was practically flooded with excited children and adults! When we did the 'We Day dance', everyone was up and dancing, and it was really cool to see everyone jumping at the same time. It was very strange when Michel Chikwanine was on stage and all 16 000 of us in the Mts Center were perfectly quiet. It was surreal when I saw Hedley and Down With Webster perform, because they are really fantastic live in concert!
The only thing I didn't like about We Day was how filled the Mts Center was with people, and it took forever to buy lunch because people were constantly cutting each other in line and there were too few workers to serve everyone in line! I even missed some of the performances because I was stuck in line! And I didn't get to see any of the performers and speakers so they could give me an autograph.
Overall, it was a excellent day. I got to see Spencer West, Al Gore, the Craig and Mark Kielburger, and a whole lot of other magnificent people that we talk about in class! I definitely want to attend We Day again. It was a really good day! (:

Anita's Pay It Forward

"Pay It Forward" is doing a random act of kindness for at least someone who will in turn pass it on to other people.
For my Pay It Forward project, Melina, Sheila and I helped Sheila's mother babysit her cousins while she was sick. We babysat for the weekend and it was more fun than I thought it would be! I chose to do this project because Sheila told I were going to make plans, but then she said that her mom was sick and she couldn't go. That made me realize that not only was Sheila missing out on a fun day, but so was Sheila's mother! The three of us wanted to make her day a little easier, so we thought that we could babysit for one weekend.
Here is a picture of one year old Matthew:
Here's 2 year old Jayden:
And 4 year old Fiona:
Our act of kindness was very successful. We made some arts and crafts, played Catch inside the house, we even gave them a bath! Matthew, Fiona and Jayden are really fun kids to spend the weekend with, I didn't even mind that I had to wake up at 8 in the morning for the weekend! I felt very satisfied because we helped a Sheila's busy mother, and I had fun for 2 days without much cell phone or computer use. It helped me remember that technology isn't the only source of fun. Sheila's mom was overjoyed when she saw the kids smiling and laughing, and it felt great seeing that we made her gloomy day brighter! I did not ask Sheila's mother to "Pay It Forward" because she was in bed sick and she was tired. I do think she helps more than 3 people regularly, though. She makes Fiona, Matthew, and Jayden's parents lives more manageable when she babysits the children.
The idea of Pay it Forward is so important because when one person helps 3 people, and one of those 3 people helps another 3 people, the numbers really add up and make a giant difference. The thought of helping someone without asking for anything in return is also really nice.
My act of kindness has made a difference to Sheila's, and all of the other children's parents, simply by Melina, Sheila and I looking after 3 very energetic kids! It was a very fun weekend, and I hope we can all do it again some other time!

Anita's Graphing Post

1. Use your notes to list the different types of graphs. Please list the advantages and disadvantages of each graph.

Line Graphs

Advantage: A line graph's advantages are that it is useful for comparing a set of data overtime. For example, your test scores for Math for a year. It is also good for finding a trend. A trend is a line of course or a pattern of events.

Disadvantage: The disadvantages of a line graph is that if the data is not exactly on an interval, the data is difficult to determine, and when you chart it the data is fairly inaccurate.

Bar Graphs

Advantage: The advantages of a bar graph is that it is very good for comparing data across categories.

Disadvantage: The disadvantages of a bar graph are similar to the line graph's disadvantages. When the data is not exactly on an interval, the data can easily be misinterpreted.

Pictographs

Advantage: The advantages of a pictograph is that it is useful for giving visual information, and it can be easily seen and interpreted with symbols.

Disadvantage: The disadvantages of a pictograph is that when the pictures are cut in small pieces, it is not very accurate or easily understood. For example, if you were to cut a picture in 1/3, it will look as if you cut it into halves.

Double Bar Graphs

Advantage: The advantages of a double bar graph is that it is good for comparing two sets of data across categories. That way you can see the comparison between two sets of data.

Disadvantages: The disadvantages of a double bar graph is that the data is hard to interpret if it is not precisely on the interval. A double bar graph is almost the same as a bar graph.

Advantage: It is best for comparing data by comparing to the whole using percentage.

Disadvantage: The disadvantages of a circle graph are that this graph is very difficult and time consuming to make, and if the data is placed into a category named 'Other', you would not know what to categorize that data in.

2. How can graphs be misleading. Show 3 ways.
A graph can be misleading if when you make it one bar wider;

Circle Graphs

You can put a
break in the y-axis;

Or you can make different pictures in a pictograph larger than the other pictures.

2a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately? A bar graph and a line graph.

2b) If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer.

I would continue selling Pizza Subs because the sales are going up, and the number of items sold are increasing.

4) Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices which graph would you choose?

I would choose the line graph, because you can easily see the the sales becoming greater, and the trend is also easier to see.
