4) Chris purchased the following items:
  • 2 binders for 4.99 each (about $10.00)
  • 1 math set for 3.99
  • a backpack for 16.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST and 7% PST.

Step 1: Add all the costs of the supplies to get a sum of $24.98.
Step 2: Multiply the sum by 0.12. The reason you multiply it by 0.12 is because it is the result of adding the GST and PST together.

Step 3: Add the taxes to the total.

3)Q. Kyle says that a population increase of 15% one year followed by an increase of 10% the next year is the same population increase of 25% over two years. Is Kyle correct? Explain.

3)A. Kyle is wrong because if you add 10+15% you get 115 and if you add 10% to that you get 126. This doesn't add up to 25%.

7)Q. A herd of 100 caribou was moved to a new location. The population increased by 10% the fist year and then increased by 20% the second year. Find the population after the second year. Explain why there was not 30% increase in population over two years.

7)A. 100+10% (First Year) =110
110+20% (second Year) =132
B. Because it wasn't 30% for 2 years. It was 2 different numbers for 2 different years.

9)Q. Arjay was thinking of buying a car worth $23 000, but delayed purchasing the car for a year. During that year, the cost of the car increased by 3.2%. What was the price of the car when Arjay purchased it? What was the total cost of the car including 5% GST and 5% PST?

9)A. $23 000+3.2% = $23 736 (CAR PRICE)

1. Kaitlyn and Jordan are converting 0.003 to a percent.
Who is correct? Show how you know.
Kaitlyn: Jordan:
0.003 = 3% 0.003 = 0.3%

Jordan is correct he is correct because you have to convert a decimal to a percent. You do that by multiplying by 100.

3. Teammates Mark and Jonas are discussing the outcome of a game.
Mark says their team scored 500% as many goals as the other
team and Jonas says they scored fi ve times as many goals as the
other team. Can they both be correct? Explain how you know.

Yes they can both be correct. They can both be correct because 100% multiplied 5 times equals 500%. So in one each 5 represents 100%.

Suzzene's scribe post

*Taxes not included.

1st Question:
Store A:
Skates = $200
50% Off.

Store B:
Skates = $200
Day 1- 30% Off.
Day 2- 20% Off.

Finding the total price for Store A:
For finding how much the sale price is for Store A, I would first find the discount. I'd find the answer by doing the decimal way.

50/100 = 0.50
0.50 x 200= 100

Then, I would subtract the original price to the discount.
200 - 100= $100

Therefore, in Store A, you would have to pay $100.

Finding the total price for Store B:
Like in Store A, I would first find the discount.

30/100= 0.30
0.30 x 200= 60

Then subtract it with the Original Price again.
200-60= $140

On the first day, you'd get the skates for $140 dollars. If you go the second day, to find how much it is, you have to do the whole process all over again except, you have a new 100%. Instead of 200, it will be 140.

20/100= 0.20
0.20 x 140= 28

Lastly, subtract once more.
140-28= $112

In the end, it shows that you can save more, ($12) if you buy at Store A instead of Store B.

2nd Question:
Store C:
Boots = $270
40% Off.

Store D:
Boots = $270
Day 1- 30% Off.
Day 2- 10% Off.

Finding the total price for Store C:
Re-do the whole process done in the 1st question.

As a reminder, first, you must find the discount.
40/100= 0.40
0.40 x 270= $108

Then, subtract original price with discount.
270-108= $162.

Therefore, if you bought in Store C, you would get the boots for $162.

Finding the total price for Store D:
Find the discount first.
30/100= 0.3
0.3 x 270= $81

Subtract Original Price with discount.
270 - 81= $189

If you bought the boots on the first day, you would buy it for $189. If you bought it on the second day...

Finding the discount:
10/100= 0.10
0.10 x 189= $18.90

Subtracting the discount from the Day 1 price, it would be $170.10
189- 18.90= $170.10

Therefore, you would save more money if you bought it at Store C instead of Store D.

If you are kind of confused, here's a video that may help you.:

Here is also a game about discounts and such.

Discount: 15/100=0.15x75=11.25

Sale Price: 75-11.25=63.75

Method:
I divide the discount by 100 then multiply that number by the original price to find the discount amount. I subtract the discount amount from the original amount to get the discounted price.

14.4% of 100 is the same as 8% of what number? Explain how you arrived at your answer.
Answer- 8% of 200 is the same as 4% of 100 because 8% is just 4% doubled.

Karl's Percent Post 4,8,12

4. Use mental math to find the following.
a) 20% of 60.

To do that I divided 20 by 100 which equals 0.2
0.2 is 1% so I multiplied 0.2 by 60 then I got my
answer.

b) 250% of 400

To do that I got 100% which is 400 so
I doubled that and got 800 then I divided 100 by2 and got 50% so
I did the same to 400 and got 200
I added it all up and got 250%= 1000.

c) 10 1/2% of 100

To do this I divided 10.50 by 100
and I got o.105 then that's 1% so I
multiplied that by 100 and I got 10.5

8. The original price of a jacket was $84.00 A store manager marked the price down by 25 1/5. By how much was the price reduced.

To do that I divided 100 by 4 which equals
25% and 21 at the other side then I found
!% by dividing 100 by 100 and I got 0.84
so to get half I divided 0.84 which is 0.42
so I added it all together and I got $ 21.42

12. A manufacturerof electric hybid vehicles claims it's vehicle will travel 200 % as far as it's regualar vehicle on full tank of gas. If the regular vehicle travels an average of 550 km on a full tank, how far will the hybrid go?

To do this I got the 100% which is
550 so I doubled that to get 200%
and I got 1100 so the hybrid car
will travel 1100 km.

Here's a video about finding percent of a number.
