Textbook Questions - Pgs. 85&86

4) Explain how squaring a number is the reverse of finding the square root of number.

Squaring a number is the reverse of finding the square root of a number because if you are trying to find the square root of 36, you can easily find the square of 36 first, like in the example below. This happens because if you are trying to find the square root of 36 you are dividing and for squaring you are multiplying. These are called reverse operations so this is why I know that squaring a number is the reverse of finding the square root of a number.

9) What is the of a square with each side length?

18) A floor mat for gymnastics is a square with a side length of 14m. What is the area of the floor mat in square metres?

21) Kate is going to put a patio in her backyard. The patio stones she is using each have an area of 1m squared.

b) What are the dimensions of another rectangular patio she could build with the same area?

c) Kate decides to make a patio with the same area but she wants it to be a square with whole number side lengths. Is this possible? Explain your reasoning.

I think that it is not possible to make a patio with the same area because 56 is not a perfect square number.

Paige's We Day Experience

Today was one of the best days of my life!

We Day is a very special concert, at the MTS center, that only students, teachers, and some adults get to go to. I was very lucky to be able to go today because only 30 students from our grade were able to. Even some grade 5 and 6's went also!

When we arrived at the MTS center there were many other children that were just like me, in fact some were older! From the moment I walked in the building I knew this day would be so much fun because everyone else was pumped too!

We started off the concert with the We Day dance which was choreographed by Shawn Desmond!

At first we got to re-learn the steps, if you haven't learned it yet, so that everyone was able to do it when we started dancing. Once we all learned it, we danced it a couple times and then Shawn Desmond went on stage!! Everyone started shouting and I felt so pumped to be there at that very moment, it was so fun getting to dance with Shawn Desmond and everyone else at the same time!

There were many inspirational speakers such as Craig and Mark Keilburger, Mia Farrow, Al Gore, Hannah Taylor, and Spencer West. To ME I would have to say that Spencer Went is my favourite and the most inspiring. He's my favourite and the most inspiring because he didn't let anyone or anything stop him from doing what he wanted. He was told that he wouldn't be able to walk or even stand up because of the disease that caused him to lose both his legs when he was younger and that he wouldn't be a regular functioning member of society.. BUT he wouldn't let those words stop him! He trained himself to learn how to walk and to inspire people that anything is possible if you try and you CAN do ANYTHING if you just believe!!

Even though there were many different speakers talking about different events, they all still had pretty much the same conclusion to it.

No matter what age, what colour, or how tall you are.... YOU can make a difference in the world as long as you set your mind to it and just believe!! "WE ARE going to change the world!!"

On November 30th I am choosing to take the Vow of Silence and hopefully many others will too! It is when we are not going to speak for 24 hours, that means we are not even able to use our phones or computers. This event is happening for all the child soldiers out there, like Michel Chikwanine was, that DO NOT have the right to speak and are being forced to slavery and work when they should be playing all day long! MIchel Chikwanine was only 5 years old when he was abducted my rebel soldiers in the soccer field of his school. He did not deserve how he lived his childhood... So I HOPE that you will join Michel Chikwanine and I and take the Vow of Silence so that YOU could stand in solidarity for those who are living this way right now!!!

Today was a very inspirational day and it was all a huge amount of fun! Thank you to all the teachers that made this day possible! (:

I am hoping that I can gain the confidence and get the courage to DO something to change the world no matter how big or small it may be.

Paige's Pay it Forward

Part 1

What is "Pay it Forward". To complete this part please edit and revise the paragraphs that you wrote after watching the movie.

Pay it Forward is when one person does something to make a difference to an other person or more. Then, the other person that they helped will help other people and try to change there lives and it keeps expanding.

Part 2

First of all, I was doing this project with 3 other classmates, Charisse, Liyanah, and Amy. Our act of kindness was helping the children in the Children's Hospital and donating money to the Children's Wish Foundation. We chose this activity because we liked to make kids happy and showing them that even though we are just kids, we can make a difference to kids in poverty and kids in the hospital. We also chose to bake cookies and use the money to donate to the Children's Wish Foundation because we wanted to help making the kids wishes come true and make a difference in their lives. We helped children who are sick in the hospital and we helped kids in poverty. We baked 10 dozen batches of cookies in 6 or more hours and we ended up with 34 bags with 3 cookies in each. We sold all those cookies at a Filipino basketball league at Gordon Bell. Each bag cost a dollar and we sold all of them and we used all the money that we earned and donated it at the Children's Wish Foundation. Our 2nd act of kindness was we went to Dollarama and bought little toys to make goody bags and spent over 80 dollars all together. We donated all the goody bags to the Children's Hospital and we made 30 children in the hospital happy. We did both of our act of kindnesses on Friday (when we baked the cookies), Saturday (when we donated all the goody bags), and on Sunday (when we sold all the cookies). We felt very inspiring to many children that we helped. We hope that we sent the message to all the people that we sold the cookies to and the children that we helped in the hospital.

Part 3

Our act of kindness was pretty successful! Our cookies was sold successfully, our goody bags were donated successfully, and the money we donated was successful. We felt that we did pretty good and inspiring, because we helped at least more than 50 people. Even though we didn't help that much people, we still made a difference in the world and this is only the beginning. They thought our idea of paying it forward was a good idea because some people gave us the money but didn't take a bag of cookies because all they wanted to do was donate. We didn't ask the people to pay it forward but we said or did it in a different way. While we were selling cookies, we had a poster that we made and it told people to pay it forward. They also asked us why we were doing this and we explained that we were donating the money to the Children's Hospital to Pay it Forward. The people were pretty impressed that girls this age, can do something to make a difference.

Part 4

Pay it Forward is important because as one person (just you) can make a difference by changing peoples lives one by one and making them live life to the FULLEST! It is also important because as it multiplies more and more people get involved in making a difference in the world.

It has definitely made a difference to others because we made children happy, made people believe that people our age can make a change in the world, and having to spend so much money to make a difference because it was worth it.

Bar Graph:

Advantage- It is best for comparing data across categories.

Disadvantage- If the interval is too large then you won't be able to see the range between each bar easily.

Double Bar Graph:

Advantage- It is best for comparing 2 sets of data across categories.

Disadvantage- If the interval is too large again then you won't be able to see the range between each two bars easily.

Line Graph:

Advantage- It is best for showing changes in data overtime.

Disadvantage- It can be hard to find out what each number is because it may not be accurate.

Circle Graph:

Advantage- It is best for comparing categories to the whole using percents. The sum of all the percents in a circle graph is 100%

Disadvantage- This graph is only used for graphs dealing with percents.

Pictograph:

Advantage- It is best for comparing data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols.

Disadvantage- It doesn't give the exact number of each category so it is harder to find out.

2a) The 2 graphs that would show it accurately would be a line graph and a bar graph.

2b) Yes I would keep selling the pizza subs because each week there are more items being sold.

4: I would choose the line graph because it shows how each month more and more people are deciding to buy the healthier foods rather than the other ones.
