Gurpreet's Textbook Questions

Here is something you should know make answering these questions easier

Textbook questions #10,#12 and#17

#10
Kai uses an entire can of paint on the square backdrop for the school play. The label on the can states that one can cover 27m2 of wall surface. Estimate the backdrop's side length to one decimal place.

Way to get this
  1. You make a number line
  2. Find the halfway point and find what number it is
  3. Add your number and find where it goes

#17

Carmel want to mount an 18cm by 18cm square on a square board that is four times the area of the picture.

a) What is the area for the picture.
b)What is the area of the board
c)What are the dimensions of the board.

Way to get this

  1. To get the answer for a) you have to multiply 18cm by 18cm and you get the answer
  2. To get the answer for b) you mulitply the area of the board which is 324 by 4 because the area of the board is 4 times of the picture
  3. To get the dimension of the board you find the square root of 1296cm which is 36cm. You have to do this in your calculator.
#12

While shopping online, Ji Hun finds square rug with an area of 11 m2. He needs to know if it will fit in his 4 m times 5 m bedroom

a) Estimate the side lengths of the rug to one decimal place.
b) Check your estimate with a calculator
c) Will the rug fit? Explain.

B) When you check on the caluclator it says 3.3 m
C) Yes the rug will fit becuasse the room is 20 m2 . The rug is only 11m by 9m

I tried uploading a video but it wont work so sorry for that but I'll try to add one if I can later

Parent Quiz

a(squared) + b(squared) = C(squared)
This Pythagorean Relationship means that the legs of the right triangle together equals to the hypotenuse, which is the longest side length of the right triangle. If the side lengths of the right triangle were not squared you would have to square them.Squared means to times it's number by it self, so it would be 6
x6. So now you multiply the numbers, so oyu would multiply them 6x6 equals 36 and the other leg and together it would equal the hypotenuse.

Scribe post for pages 135-137 Questions (1,3,11)

1. Kaitlyn and Jordan are converting 0.003 to a percent.
Who is correct? Show how you know.
Kaitlyn: Jordan:
0.003 = 3% 0.003 = 0.3%

Jordan is correct he is correct because you have to convert a decimal to a percent. You do that by multiplying by 100.

3. Teammates Mark and Jonas are discussing the outcome of a game.
Mark says their team scored 500% as many goals as the other
team and Jonas says they scored fi ve times as many goals as the
other team. Can they both be correct? Explain how you know.

Yes they can both be correct. They can both be correct because 100% multiplied 5 times equals 500%. So in one each 5 represents 100%.

11. Express the shaded portion of each diagram
as a fraction, a decimal, and a percent.

a) Fraction: 17 I couldn't get a fraction line in the middle so yeah
25

Decimal:0.68
Percent: 68%

b) Fraction: 9
24
0.375
Decimal:Percent: 37.5%

Gurpreet's We day Post

On November 23 2011 30 of us got to go to the MTS center to get inspired at we day. We came to our school at 8:00 and got prepared then we got on a bus and went to the MTS center. Some grade 6ers were also with us. Our teachers Mr. Harbeck, Mrs Lee, Mrs Wilson, and Mr. potter went with us.

When we got there the MTS center was full and we went to go find our seats which were located at 214. When we sat down there were helpers there to pump us up and answer questions but nobody needed to get pumped up we were all already so excited.

First thing we did was learn the we day dance if you didn't know it. We practiced for a while then Shawn Desmond came on stage. After Shawn Desmond many more inspirational speakers came on stage. These speakers were Craig and Mark Keilburger, Hannah Taylor, and Spencer West, Mia Farrow, Al Gore, Michel Chikwanine and more.
A couple of times we said " WE ARE!" . We said this because they asked us "Who is the change" or "Are you feeling inspired". Everyone was screaming saying "WE ARE"
The most important speaker for me was Michel Chikwanine. His speech made a big impact on us all. More than 16 000 people not making one sound is amazing and that happened when he was showing the cards. The message that he gave was even more powerful and to me more inspiring then all of the speakers and that says a lot because they were also so much inspiring. His speech made us all want to do "vow of silence".
The day was fun, amazing and brought a lot of powerful messages. If someone told me I could do this all over again I would want to very much. It was a very powerful event nothing like i have ever seen or been to before.
Here are some pictures that show what happened there.

Sorry my pictures are bad. I tried putting them as a video but it would not work.

Gurpreet's Pay it Forward

Pay it Forward is a act that you do and the person you do it for, passes it on to someone else.

Here are the questions I am going to answer in my paragraph

1.Who are you going to help?
2.What are you are going to do
3.Where are you going to go?
4.When are you going to do this?

For my pay it Forward I actually did two things. I worked early in the mornings at a breakfast program and helped them serve children for a couple of days and I donated some clothes and books at West Central Woman's Resource Center. At the breakfast program I a going volunteer and helped them serve children that go to the school. I am doing this at 8:00 or earlier sometimes before school. At the West Central Woman's Resource Center I am going to donate clothes and children books. I am going to a breakfast program because I think they need help sometimes and while I help them they can make snacks and other things for the children later on. I am going to a local Woman's Resource Center. I am going to volunteer a few days a week so I get a few hours done. I am going to do this after school.

These pictures were at the Breakfast Program

These were at the West Central Women's Resource Center
After the Pay it Forward
I think my Pay it Forward went great. In the breakfast program I asked them to pay it forward they didn't get it but after some explaining they did and said they would try paying it forward. In the center I didn't ask them because they already help women who are in need so they are paying it forward. I felt great after doing this because it really made me happy seeing them happy. It felt that way because seeing that I have really done something great that would help them and seeing them smile and say thank-you it just made the work and waking up in the morning seem not that big of a deal.

Gurpreet's Graphing post

Graphing Post

Bar graph
Advantage
-compares data across categories
-make sure your intervals show the data right
Disadvantage
-only compares one set of data
-if intervals are wrong can be not accurate

Double bar graph
Advantage
-it compares two sets of data across categories
Disadvantage
-if the intervals are not correct it may make the graph not accurate

Line graph
Advantage
-compares change in data over time
Disadvantage
-You have to use data that happens over time

Pictograph
Advantage
-compares data and can easily be seen by the pictures
-can count pictures easily
Disadvantage
-sometimes can't see the exact amount of data
example you cant show 2.5 on this graph

Pie graph
Advantage
-compares data part to whole using percents
Disadvantage
-you have to know what the parts are out of
-it takes a long time to make if its not already in percents

2. How can graphs be misleading. Show 3 ways.
Putting a break on the y-axis

Distorting the visuals (making a visual/symbol larger than the rest)

Distorting the the size of a bar (making a bar wider/ putting more area inside a bar)
I could not find a picture for this
2a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately?
I think a bar graph and line graph more accurately
2b) If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer.

Yes I would countine selling pizza subs because pizza sub sales are getting better.
Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices which graph would you choose?
I would choose the pictograph because it shows that we can see 2.5 more hearts in November than in October.

4a) Change each graph so that your information looks even MORE impressive. You may not change the
data just the graphs

( For some reason I could not add a tittle to it so sorry)

Here is a video that I thought would help

I hope this post helped

Gurpreet proportion post

Proportion

Task 1

Ratio: The relation between two similar numbers with respect to the number of times
the first contains the second.
Rate: A rate compares 2 quantities measured in 2 different units
Proportion: An equation which states that 2 ratios are equal.

Task 2
  1. 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about _____mph

2.As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with

Task 3
What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16 or 4/9 = 16/32

One way to prove that this is true is when you cross- multiply, vertical and
horizontally they all have the same answer. Here is one of the ways to do it.

4/9=16/32 is false because if you do the same thing you get different numbers to divide it by so it is false. Here is a quote so you can better understand it" Whatever you do to the top you must do to the bottom".

Task 4
Here is a proportion video to help you cross-multiply

http://youtube/Uv_hPQfJE4g

Task 5

http://www.concurringopinions.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/CrimeInAmerica2.jpg

  1. Does this seem fair? To be it does not seem fair because the homeless guy only stole $100 and turned himself in and the other guy stole 3 billion
  2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?

What would you have done if you were the judge?
I would have given the homeless guy only 1 year or maybe even less because he confessed but the mortgage guy would about 30 years.
