Oudorn's Textbook Questions (12,14,17)

12. While shopping online, Ji Hun finds a square rug with the area of 11 m squared. He needs to know if it will fit his 4m x 5m bedroom.

a)Estimate the side length of the rug, to one decimal place

b)Check your estimate with a calculator.

Square root of 11=3.316

c) Will the rug fit? Explain.
Yes it will, because the area of the room is 20m²

14. Alex is thinking of a number. The number has a square root between 7 and 8, and a multiple of 12.

a) What number could he be thinking of?

60

b) Is there more than one answer? Explain.
No, because 60 is the only number that is between the square root of 7 and 8 that is a multiple of 12.

17. Carmel wants to mount an 18cm x 18cm square picture on a square board that is four times the area or the picture

a) What is the area of the picture?

Area = 324cm²

b) What is the area of the board?

324 x 324 = 1296cm²

c) What are the dimensions of the board?

Square root of 1296= 36cm

36 x 36 = 1296cm²

Pythagorean Relationship

1.Answer in short paragraph and with diagrams

a² + b² = c² is a formula. If you take the legs of the triangle( a and b), square them, then add them, you will get c²(hypotenuse²). You can determain if the triangle is a right triangle or not by doing a² + b² = c².

2. Solve for the missing side length.

C²= A²(5cm)+B²(12cm)
C²=5²+12²
C²=(5x5)+(12x12)
C²=25+144
C²=169
C= square root of 169
C= 13cm

3.Is this a right triangle? Prove it!!!

Oudorn's Textbook Questions(4,6 and 13)

Question 4:
Chris purchased the following items:
• 2 binders at $4.99 each
• 1 math set for $3.99
• a backpack for $19.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST
and 7% PST.

4.99+4.99+3.99+19.99=$33.96
0.12x33.96=$4.08
4.08+33.96=$38.04

Question 6:
A store discounted items by 50% off the
original price one week. The following
week an additional 10% was taken off the
already reduced price. The regular price
of a CD player was $85.00. What is the
reduced price in the second week?

85.00÷2=$42.50
42.50÷10=$4.25
42.50-4.25=$38.25

Question 13:
What is the total cost for four tires that
sell for $85 each, plus 5% GST and a
1.5% environment tax?

85.00x4=$340
0.065x340=$22.10
22.10+340=$362.10

Oudorn's Pay it Forward

Part 1:
What is "Pay it Forward". To complete this part please edit and revise the paragraphs that you wrote after watching the movie.

Pay it forward is when someone is helping another person(s) by doing a act of kindness and soon that person will do the same to others.

Part 2:
What was your Pay It Forward act of kindness?
Why did you choose this activity?
Who did you help?
What did you do?
When did you do you act of kindness?

what we did for our act of kindness was donating clothes to value village and buying stuff to put in shoebox so we can give it to the people in Africa. We chose these activities because when we donate our clothes to value village other people can afford the quality goods at great values. Also
we donated to Africa because the children in Africa never got to celebrate christmas and never got gifts, so we wanted them to know what christmas is like. We helped the people in need of good quality clothing and helped the kids in africa. We went to value village to donate the clothes and went to dollarama to buy things to put in the shoebox. We did our active kindness on Sunday November 13.

Part 3:
How did your act of kindness go?
What Happened?
How did you feel?
How did the person or people react?
Did you ask the person or people to "Pay It Forward"?
How did they react to your request?
If you did not ask the person to "Pay It Forward" how come?

My act of kindness went great because we had a lot of fun going around to try to make a difference. What we did was donate clothes to Value Village and talked to the worker about pay it forward. We felt really great , because we made a difference by paying it foward and donating things to value village and sending a shoebox full of toys and others to africa for christmas. The children in Africa doesn't really get gifts or even celebrate christmas, that's why we decided to donate. The Value Village worker was surprised because she thought we wont be donating yet at this age. We asked the lady who worked at value village if she would pay it forward, and she said "after seeing what you guys have done, I will pay it forward".

Part 4:
Why is the idea of "Pay it Forward" important?
Has your act of kindness made a difference?

The idea of Pay it forward is important because we are helping people that are in need and telling other people about pay it forward so they could do it too. I think our act of kindness made a difference because now some of the kids in Africa will know what christmas is.

Oudorn's Graphing Post

Graph Post

1. Use your notes to list the different types of graphs. Please list the advantages and disadvantages of each graph.

Circle graph- Advantages of using a circle graph is that you can see at a glance the largest group attended and a disadvantage is that the circle graph takes to long because you have to change your data into percents.

Bar Graph- Advantages of using a bar graph is that it is best for comparing data across categories and a disadvantage is that it can be only used with discrete data.

Double Bar Graph- A advantage for double bar graph is that it can be used to compare 2 sets of data. And a disadvantage is that it can only compare a couple of data depending on the intervals and can be not accurate.

Line Graph- An advantage is that it compares data over time. A disadvantage is that it can be only used with continuous data.

Pictograph- An advantage for a pictograph is that it compares data that can be easily counted and represented using symbols. And a disadvantage is that when the symbols are cut, you can't tell how much of the symbol they have taken off.

2. How can graphs be misleading. Show 3 ways.

  • putting a break on the y-axis

  • changing the size of a bar (making a bar wider/putting more area inside a bar)

  • distorting the size of the visual

3a) The following chart shows Pizza Sub Sales over a month. What 2 graphs would show the information accurately?
A line graph and a bar graph

3b. If you were selling Pizza Subs would you continue? How does your graph explain your answer.

Yes, I would continue because when I look at my graph, it shows me that I am selling more every week.

4. Below you see 2 different examples of graphs showing healthy choices sold at the canteen. If you had to convince Mrs Mota that we should continue selling healthy choices which graph would you choose?

I would choose the line graph because it looks like every month the canteen is selling more and more.

4a) Change each graph so that your information looks even MORE impressive. You may not change the data just the graphs.

Oudorn's Proportion Post

Ratio: A ratio is a comparison of two quantities that have the same unit of measure.
Rate: A rate is a comparison of two quantities measured in different units.
Proportion: A equation which states that two ratios or fractions are equal.

1. 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about 76 mph.

2. As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.

What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16 or 4/9 = 16/32

1. Does this seem fair? No.

2.With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice? I dont think its fair because the rich guy is going to jail for 3 years because he stole 3billion and the homeless is going to jail for 15 years just for stealing 100 dollars.

3.What would you have done if you were the judge?

I would make the rich guy go to jail for 15 years and the homeless guy go to jail for 3 years.
