Sompong's Estimating Square Roots Post

This is what we learned today in class..

To estimate square roots you can use a number line.
Example:

Example:
To find the square root of 30, you take the 2 nearest perfect squares. So the square root of 30 would be in between the square root of 25 and 36.

To make this easier you can turn the square roots into fractions. The square root fraction of 30 is 5 5/11, I know this because..

You subtract the 2 perfect squares to get your denominator.

Example: Smaller perfect square= 25.. = 4 9/9, 26 = 5 1/11, 27 = 5 2/11 , 28 = 5 3/11, 29 = 5 4/11, and so on.

And this is what we did for today's math class! (:

Here's a video that will help you learn more about estimating square roots!

Sorry if the video is too long, it's the best I can find!

1. Explain the Pythagorean Relationship

Pythagorean Relationship
-When the areas of the squares attached to the legs of a right triangle add up to the area of the square attached to the hypotenuse (the longest side of a right triangle).

2. Solve for the missing side length

3. Is this a right triangle? Prove it!!!

Sorry, the color didn't work when I started Pythagorean Relationship.

Sompong's We Day Post

We Day was an amazing day to experience. I had never been to a concert before and i`m happy that We Day happened to be my first! Our school had 45 tickets to go to the concert, 5 of the tickets were for the teachers, 10 went to grade 5 and 6`s, and 30 to grade 8 students. There was a lot of grade 8 students that wanted to go to this concert, so we made posters, had to present to our grade 8 teachers and explain to them why we wanted to go to We Day. I was lucky enough to get to go to We Day along with other grade 8 students! :)

Everyone that went to the concert had a t-shirt that they had to wear which said `It Starts With Me`. We met at school at 8:00 AM and then bused to the MTS Center. At the MTS Center surprisingly we didn`t have to wait outside, we went straight to our seating section (2-14). There were 16 000 people filling up the MTS center and it was unbelievably crowded everywhere we went but we managed to get through.

At the beginning of the concert everyone got up and danced the We Day dance! We learned it step-by-step and then Shawn Desman went on stage and danced with us! After that there were speakers that spoke to us about We Day and their experiences in life. Shawn Desman, Neverest Down With Webster, Sierra Noble, and Hedley all performed for us throughout the concert. Craig Kielburger, Mark Kielburger, Mia Farrow, Al Gore, Paul Martin, Degrassi Cast, Rick Hansen, Spencer West had all given amazing speeches and all had experiences in their life that led them to participating in We Day. Unfortunately I missed Hannah Taylor`s speech because of the lineups during lunch. Michel Chikwanine touched me the most with his.. speech. Michel was only 5 years old when he was taken by some horrible soldiers that took him into the jungle. They cut his wrists and rubbed cocaine and gunpowder into his open wounds. Then they made him hold a gun, blindfolded him and told him to shoot! Without knowing what his target was, Michel pulled the trigger and when he took off the blindfold, he saw that he had shot his bestfriend `Kevin`. He was then forced to be a child soldier. Michel was silenced along with 300 000 other child soldiers, but he stood up for what he believed in and is now giving speeches all around the world.

We Day was honestly the BEST experience in my entire life. If I could re-live this day, I definitely would. I learned that no matter how old you are, what your disability is, where you come from, what your background is, you can still make a difference if you just believe in yourself. We Day has inspired me to make a difference! :)

Sompong's Pay It Forward

Part 1
What is "Pay it Forward". To complete this part please edit and revise the paragraphs that you wrote after watching the movie.

Pay it Forward is when one person does something to make a difference to an other person or more. Then, the other person that they helped will help other people and try to change there lives and it keeps expanding.

Part 2
First of all, I was doing this project with 3 other classmates, Paige, Liyanah, and Charisse. Our act of kindness was helping the children in the Children's Hospital and donating money to the Children's Wish Foundation. We chose this activity because we liked to make kids happy and showing them that even though we are just kids, we can make a difference to kids in poverty and kids in the hospital. We also chose to bake cookies and use the money to donate to the Children's Wish Foundation because we wanted to help making the kids wishes come true and make a difference in their lives. We helped children who are sick in the hospital and we helped kids in poverty. We baked 10 dozen batches of cookies in 6 or more hours and we ended up with 34 bags with 3 cookies in each. We sold all those cookies at a Filipino basketball league at Gordon Bell. Each bag cost a dollar and we sold all of them and we used all the money that we earned and donated it at the Children's Wish Foundation. Our 2nd act of kindness was we went to Dollarama and bought little toys to make goody bags and spent over 80 dollars all together. We donated all the goody bags to the Children's Hospital and we made 30 children in the hospital happy. We did both of our act of kindnesses on Friday (when we baked the cookies), Saturday (when we donated all the goody bags), and on Sunday (when we sold all the cookies). We felt very inspiring to many children that we helped. We hope that we sent the message to all the people that we sold the cookies to and the children that we helped in the hospital.

Part 3
Our act of kindness was pretty successful! Our cookies was sold successfully, our goody bags were donated successfully, and the money we donated was successful. We felt that we did pretty good and inspiring, because we helped at least more than 50 people. Even though we didn't help that much people, we still made a difference in the world and this is only the beginning. They thought our idea of paying it forward was a good idea because some people gave us the money but didn't take a bag of cookies because all they wanted to do was donate. We didn't ask the people to pay it forward but we said or did it in a different way. While we were selling cookies, we had a poster that we made and it told people to pay it forward. They also asked us why we were doing this and we explained that we were donating the money to the Children's Hospital to Pay it Forward. The people were pretty impressed that girls this age, can do something to make a difference.

Part 4
Pay it Forward is important because as one person (just you) can make a difference by changing peoples lives one by one and making them live life to the FULLEST! It is also important because as it multiplies more and more people get involved in making a difference in the world.
It has definitely made a difference to others because we made children happy, made people believe that people our age can make a change in the world, and having to spend so much money to make a difference because it was worth it.

Here is our Pay It Forward video! Hope you like it! :)
