Patricia's Proportion Post

Task 1

Please define

ratio - A comparison of quantities in the same units.

Example:

Ratio Notation: 3:9 , Fraction: 3/9

rate - A comparison of two quantities measured in different units.

Example:

$ 1.69/100 grams.

proportion - An equation which states that 2 ratios (fractions) are equal.

Example:

2/6 = 4/12

Task 2

Copy these questions into your post. Answer them using proportion statements.
  1. 5 hours to travel 360 miles is about 72 mph

  2. As a playgroup worker, if I increase the amount of apple juice I am serving at the playgroup from 25 ml to 100 ml, how much should I increase the the orange juice to, to keep the quantities in the same proportion? The orange juice is 50 ml to start with.
Task 3

What are the three ways you can prove that equivalent ratio statements are true?
3/4 = 12/16 or 4/9 = 16/32

3/4 = 12/16 True
4/9 = 16/32 False

Task 4

Find a video about using proportion and embed it in your post. Make sure you select the small size of the video.

Here is a proportion video to help you.

Task 5

We are starting to engage in discussions about social justice. What do you think about this image below. Use the link to copy it into your post. Then answer the questions

  1. Does this seem fair?
It does not seem fair because the homeless guy only stole $100 and the other guy stole 3 billion.

2. With what you know about proportion look and read what is in the image above. Does it seem just and fair? Why have you made this choice?

I think its not fair because the rich guy stole 3 billion while the homeless guy has to spent time in jail for 15 years.

3. What would you have done if you were the judge?

If I were the judge I will give the homeless guy 1 year or maybe less.

Hi Patricia! Your proportion post was great. I really liked the pictures that you put up in there and showing different colors of the answers in your questions. I suggest that you put the definitions in your own words, so that it shows that you understand each word. The video helped me a lot. Thank you!
